2013 Grade 11 Field Studies: Takayama
During this trip, three communities buried deep in mountain country are visited. Takayama has been an administrative center for many centuries and is of world fame for its priceless floats of gold. Hida Furukawa was famous nationwide for its carpenters, with the tradesmen working on imperial palaces in lieu of taxes. Shirakawa, with its 63 steeply thatched houses, was isolated for centuries during the winter, but now, with World Heritage status, is a top tourist destination.
